Youtube Stratego Channels

An effective way to learn how to play Stratego is to watch other players play.  Thankfully, more and more players have been recording and uploading Stratego games that they've played at Stratego.com and Gravon.com.  Some Youtubers are even live streaming matches.  You can watch them play live and hear their thoughts as they struggle to win hard fought matches.  A few people are even creating how to videos with tips and strategies on how to play the game.  This is very important since it can be very hard for beginners to learn how to play winning Stratego by themselves.  Many get frustrated and stuck at a certain level and need help to improve their game play.  Check out some of the video channels below and watch their videos.  You'll probably start to immediately see improvements in your game!

Listed below are some of the popular Stratego youtube channels.  Please watch, subscribe, like and comment on their videos.

Marshal Blitzer Stratego Games from Gravon Archive Files

One of the best ways to learn how to get better at playing any game, including Stratego, is to watch how great players play.   I found all the won/loss/tie records of the archived game board setups at the Gravon Stratego website.  I’ll be listing the files of many of the top players(won/loss percentage record) so you can view and analyze how the top Stratego players performed.  Studying how the top players play can dramatically increase how well you play.

This player was a typical Marshal Blitzer.  He used his Marshal and Colonel very early in the game to help attack the far right side of his opponent.  He also used the General to attack the middle of the board.    The player had a very aggressive style of play and won lots of games.  His record was:
Wins = 130 Losses = 21 Ties = 7 Games Played = 158
 Winning Percentage = 86.09%
Here's what the game board setup looked like:
As Player 2
As Player 1
Here's a listing of the Marshal Blitzer's games. I will highlight some of the interesting games for you to view as I find time to watch all of them.

Top 5 Mistakes Beginners Make Playing Stratego

Top 5 Mistakes Beginners Make Playing Stratego

  1.  They quit too early.  Many Stratego beginners quit as soon as they lose a high piece.  But as long as you can continue to advance to your opponent’s side and attack pieces, you still have a chance to win.  Many players have open flags, so you just might get lucky finding the flag with a lotto attack.  Make sure you use up all of your scouts to attack pieces on the other side before quitting.  The best wins are usually when you come from behind.  So don't quit!
  2. They don’t know or understand the 2 Square Rule.  The rule states: No piece can move back and forth between the same two spaces for more than three consecutive turns.  I didn't know about this rule when I first started playing at Stratego.com.  My ignorance of the rule cost me several early losses.  You need to understand this rule so you don't get trapped.  And once you understand the 2 square rule, you can use it to defeat other beginners that don't understand the rule.  I’ll eventually make a video on the 2 Square Rule.  It’s much easier to understand once you’ve seen it in action.
  3.  Waste low pieces needlessly.  Many players get excited about attacking and sometimes forget or neglect to move lower pieces when they are being attacked by a higher known piece.  Sometimes they just leave them in a vulnerable spot where they get trapped.   Every piece is valuable in the game of Stratego.  You’ll need them late in the game to stop miner attacks on your bombs and flag, to scout incoming pieces or to bluff your opponent.  Your pieces should always try to capture another piece or reveal new information on your opponent's piece.  Never let your lower pieces get captured by a revealed piece without trying to escape, unless you are trying to lure a high piece away from his flag, lure a high piece away from a blocked lane so another piece can enter their side or to make a sacrifice to free a higher ranked trapped piece.  If you become trapped between 2 pieces, always let the unknown piece capture it to reveal new information.
  4.  Waste scouts too early.  You are given 8 scouts to start the game.  It’s OK to use a few on the front row to scout out possible bombs or to reveal incoming pieces.  Usually, you won’t find out much valuable information with the front row scouts.  Scouts are best used in the middle part of the game when you want to reveal your opponents higher pieces, especially the marshal.  They also are very instrumental in trying to capture the spy or revealing back row bombs and trapped quality pieces for your high pieces to capture.  Try to save at least half of your scouts for the middle/end game.  If you lose all of your scouts early in the game, your opponent will likely start moving his spy into your territory trying to surprise attack your Marshal.  The spy becomes much more dangerous.
  5.  Revealing high pieces early.  Try not to reveal your Marshal, General and Colonels early in the game.  It’s best to attack an oncoming known piece with a piece that’s only 1 rank higher.  Revealing where your high pieces are located allows your opponent to make well thought out attack plans.  If your Marshal gets revealed, your opponent can immediately think about attacking with his General.  You have to be prepared to defend that type of counter attack.  Revealing higher pieces also limits your ability to bluff late in the game.  And it's much, much harder to come back when you are down in pieces because your opponent can usually block off attacks(if they have a good memory and can remember the revealed higher pieces).
Try to eliminate these common beginner mistakes and you’ll start to become a much better Stratego player.

Best Winning Percentage Stratego Game Board Setup on Gravon

One of the best ways to learn how to get better at playing any game, including Stratego, is to watch how great players play.   I found all the won/loss/tie records of the archived game board setups at the Gravon Stratego website.  I’ll be listing the files of many of the top players(won/loss percentage record) so you can view and analyze how the top Stratego players performed.  Studying how the top players play can dramatically increase how well you play.

Here’s is what the top winning game board setup looked like:

Setup As Player 2

As Player 1

You can see the player had an unusual placement for his flag(2nd row).  The player also bombed in his flag.  The player also has a very strong right side with his colonel, marshal, spy and general placed there.  The player of this setup(I'm assuming only 1 person) had a won/loss/tie record of:

Wins = 87 Losses = 9 Ties = 1 Games Played = 97 Winning Percentage = 90.62%

That's a really good winning percentage.  The person stopped playing, at least with this setup, in 2006.  I watched only a few of the games so far and was really impressed at the playing style.  The player rarely made mistakes, was great at trapping pieces and had very few wasted moves.  It seemed like every move had a purpose. Here's a listing of all that player's games.

Won/Loss Percentage of Every Stratego Flag Position (Almost 42,500 Games)

Click on the table above to view the winning percentage of every flag position from almost 42,500 Gravon Stratego archived game files.  I did not include draws in the calculation.

It looks like the best spots to place your Stratego flag are at the bottom center and bottom left. Placing flags in the bottom center allows you to easily defend your flag from both sides.  Your high ranking pieces are never too far away to protect your flag.

There seems to be an outlier with a very good winning percentage on the right wing column, 2nd row(position#19).  The reason why it was so high(over 63%) was because a very good player was using the same setup and they won a lot!

The inner wing columns and 2 center columns on the 2 top rows are the worst places to put your flag.  Your flags are right in those scouting sweet spots.  That makes it very hard to hide your flag location.  The 4 squares behind the lakes also seem to be bad locations for your flags.  Players always try to scout those squares behind the lakes looking for high ranking pieces and the spy.  It's probably not a good idea to place your flag there.  Use the chart above to help you find the best flag location to optimize your chances of winning your next Stratego game.

Here's all the raw data I calculated for each flag position.  Position 0 is the bottom left square.  The position numbering moves left to right for each row.  Player 1 is a player that starts the game with a flag at that position.  Player 2 is a player that moves 2nd with a flag at that position.  The totals combine both stats from Player 1 and 2.

View Top Row, Open Flag Winning Game files at Gravon Stratego Archive site

I did an analysis on almost 85,000 Stratego game board setups, from the Gravon Stratego archive files, to find out how players fared with open flags on the top row.  I did not count the 4 positions behind the lakes.  Here are the results:

Total Wins Total Games Win Percentage
Player 1 Center Squares 3 35 8.57%
Player 2 Center Squares 5 34 8.82%
Player 1 Outside Wings 57 169 33.73%
Player 2 Outside Wings 54 140 38.57%
Player 1 Inside  Wings 10 34 29.41%
Player 2 Inside Wings 3 34 8.82%

Most of the time the players lost with open flags on the top row.  It's incredibly difficult to win with a flag on the 2 center squares or the 2 inside columns on the far sides.  Winning was a lot easier on the top row on the outside wings, but still below 50%.  In the stats above, Player 1 is the player that moves first.  Player 2 moves second.  Going 2nd should be a little harder to win, because your opponent has 2 chances to win the game by scouting your flag in 1 move.  But that was only the case on the inside columns.  In the stats above, I only counted the wins, not losses or ties.  There were a few draws in these games, but most of the time the players with open flags on the front row lost.  The winning stats are a little inflated too because some of the "wins" were from players quitting after the 1st move or leaving the game.  Also, in a few games, both players had flags on the top row.

The files below were the winning games with flags in the center front top row(2 middle squares):

You can find the stratego game files at the archive site on Gravon:

You can find the player to view the files at this link: http://www.gravon.de/gravon/stratego/strados2.jsp

Some of these games are very interesting to watch.  I would not recommend playing with open flags on the 2 center squares or inside wings.  It's too difficult to win.  Playing with the flag on the outside wings is much, much easier to win.  In fact, it's a lot of fun.  In the future, I'll write a post giving tips on how to win those games provided you survive the first couple of moves.
